Westerwood Neighborhood sits west of downtown Greensboro bordering Hillside Drive, Friendly Avenue, Lake Daniel Park and Josephine Boyd Avenue. Developed in the 1920s, the neighborhood is full of diverse historic architecture, tree-lined streets and residents from all walks of life.

Lake Daniel Park winds throughout the neighborhood and includes a children’s playground, tennis/pickleball courts, basketball court, and a sand volleyball court. Outdoor enthusiasts of all ages enjoy the Lake Daniel Park Greenway which converges in Westerwood with the Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway, the Latham Park Greenway, and the Downtown Greenway.

Neighbors are known to be creative, connected and caring to each other. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, local neighbors published Westerwood in Quarantine, a point-in-time photographic journal of personal experiences in Westerwood during the early-stages of the pandemic.

Insider Tips

  • An early enclave of Black residents settled around the former Delphina Street in Westerwood as early as the 1870s. This early Black community was comprised of a large percentage of homeowners and families who came to Greensboro from as far away as South Carolina and Virginia to work as night watchmen, shoe makers, cooks, and butlers.  In this community of perhaps 100 residents, many of the frame houses were owned by their inhabitants. Several properties were acquired in the late 1880s and 1890s through transactions with members of the Methodist church. Delphina was renamed Guilford Avenue and public art is in curation to honor this history.
  • Westerwood is home to several pieces of public art including Cairn’s Course by Thomas Sayre and the Westerwood Mural by Gina Franco.
  • Neighborhood homes are often highlighted by the Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs thanks to the informal “Not Your Mothers Garden Club.”
