The story of Lake Jeanette begins in the late 1800s with brothers, Moses and Caesar Cone. Originally the brothers purchased 2,000 acres from the North Carolina Steel and Iron Company for their Cone Mills textile operations. As their business expanded, so did their vision, leading to the creation of Lake Jeanette in 1940 – named in honor of their granddaughter. This lake, nourished by Richland Creek and various springs, was initially a “working” lake, vital for the mills’ operation and even contributing to Lake Townsend, Greensboro’s reservoir, during high water levels.
Today, Lake Jeanette residents are often seen kayaking, paddle boating and fishing on the lake. The neighborhood is intertwined with scenic walking trails and green spaces among the trees. The Lake Jeanette Swim and Tennis Club is a hub of neighborhood activity, featuring tennis courts, lap pools, and water slides. The proximity to larger lakes like Lake Brandt and Lake Townsend also attracts outdoor enthusiasts.
