Founded in 1902, the Fisher Park neighborhood is comprised of almost 900 residences – single family houses, townhomes, condos, apartments and businesses – immediately north of downtown Greensboro. Fisher Park residents are diverse in ages, economic situations, and life styles while sharing an appreciation of character-filled older homes, plentiful sidewalks, mature canopy trees, and its two central features, Fisher Park and Green Hill Cemetery.
For those who want an urban living experience, but with a true neighborhood feel with front porches and tree-lined sidewalks, Fisher Park is the best neighborhood.
The centerpiece of the neighborhood is the park itself, Fisher Park, a 12 acre park with a stream surrounded by woods and 1.2 miles of natural walking trails and a playground. Divided by North Elm Street, each side of the park has a distinctive character. The east park has meandering paths, playground equipment including a sandbox, swings, slides, and a climbing area. The west park is more densely vegetated and includes meandering shady paths, an open meadow area perfect for picnicking, dog play, and relaxing. The stream that bisects the west park is home to many animals and the park hosts hawks and owls as well as a variety of birds and is a great spot for kids to enjoy and play. Historic stone bridges that cross the stream provide a beautiful visual interest as well. A recently completed Master Plan will bring improvements to the park in years to come.
Green Hill Cemetery is a 51 acre cemetery that was founded in 1877 and is the oldest and most historic City operated cemetery in Greensboro. The design and layout is in the Garden Style with many pathways meandering throughout that make it ideal for walking. An inventory of over 700 trees has been conducted by a professional botanist and the many unusual trees are labeled on site and mapped here. The Friends of Green Hill Cemetery is a small volunteer group that offers tours, assists with cemetery enhancements, and works on gravestone conservation.
In addition, Fisher Park is connected to the Downtown Greenway, a four-mile paved greenway trail that encircles downtown Greensboro and serves as the central hub of the entire greenways and trails system in the community. With its large selection of public art, the DG is a great place for recreation, transportation, and getting to know the surrounding communities.
